The first MGC workshop was held in 2003, with the Middleware Conference, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were we saw a variety of efforts in Middleware for Grid Computing, with 16 technical presentations and discussions on several stimulating topics including, Classic Grids, Object Oriented technologies, Service-based Grids, Open grid Service Architecture, Agent Grid, Interactive Grid, Grid Economy / Scheduling, and Portlets. Thoroughly revised, extended selected papers were published in a Special Issue of Concurrency and Computation: Practice and Experience Journal (CPE) Vol. 16(5), 2004.
The second workshop was held in Toronto, Canada with an unprecedented number of quality submissions. Fifteen papers and nine posters were selected out of forty-eight submissions. Thoroughly revised, extended selected papers were published in a CPE special issue, Vol.18(6), 2006.
The third workshop, in Grenoble, France, received a good number of high-quality submissions and sixteen papers were selected out of the thirty-eight submissions, and four have been invited for posters. Thoroughly revised, extended selected papers were published in a CPE special issue, Vol.19(14), 2007.
The fourth MGC edition, held in Melbourne, Australia, had fourteen high-quality papers selected out of forty-two submissions. Additionally 7 posters have been accepted. The presenters highlight issues and solutions in one or more of the themes identified for the workshop. Thoroughly revised, extended selected papers were published in a CPE special issue, Vol.20(09), 2008.
The fifth MGC workshop, held in California . US, was categorized into three tracks, including Applications, Conceptual Views/Theory and Development Techniques-Technologies. Ten papers were selected out of thirty three submissions. Thoroughly revised, extended selected papers were published in a CPE special issue, Vol.21(13), 2009.
The sixth edition of the MGC workshop, held in Leuven - Belgium, brought together researches in middleware, addressing: Resource Management and Scheduling, Strategies and Protocols to support QoS, Information Services, Dependability and Fault Tolerance, Performance Evaluation and Modeling, Utility computing, Web Services, Object Metadata and Schemas, Programming Models and Tools, Core Grid Infrastructure, Cloud Computing in Grid Middleware, Grid Middleware in Data Provenance, Semantic Grid Middleware, Grid Security, Virtualization in Grid Middleware, Data Grid Middleware, Peer to Peer Protocols in Grid Computing, Network Support for Grid Computing, Portals and Portlet Containers, Adaptive/Autonomic Middleware, Messaging in Grid Middleware, Web 2.0 Middleware, Application Testbeds, and Grid Middleware Independent Application Interfacing. Eleven papers were selected out of the thirty-three originally submitted. Thoroughly revised, extended selected papers were published in a CPE special issue, Vol.22(3), 2010.
The seventh MGC was named International Workshop on Middleware for Grids, Clouds and e-Science and included new research topics. Six papers were selected out of the eighteen originally submitted. Extended, thoroughly revised selected papers are under reviewing process for a CPE special issue to appear.
The MGC series of workshops have been generating substantial interest in the community and it is anticipated that this interest will continue. Far from exhausting the topics of interest, they have paved the way for a 8th edition of the workshop in the series.
For the MGC 2010 workshop, researchers are encouraged to submit and present original work related to Grid, Cloud, and e-Science middleware to be considered for publication. Within this overall scope, MGC 2010 will emphasize issues of scalability in terms of grid and cloud mechanisms for computation and data scaling as well as adaptive and semantic mechanisms for scaling capabilities across disciplines and over time.
